Sikkim Manipal College of Physiotherapy (SMCPT), under the aegis of Sikkim Manipal University (SMU), organised an Induction Programme – Deeksharambh for the new batch of Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) and Master of Physiotherapy (MPT) students.
The programme commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp followed by the felicitation of esteemed dignitaries. Prof. Nikita Joshi Sonowal, Principal of SMCPT, delivered the welcome address, sharing the institution’s vision and mission. She encouraged students to immerse themselves in the academic experience and emphasised professional growth. Inspiring video messages from SMCPT alumni across the globe were presented, highlighting their career journeys and continued connection to the institution.

Prof. Sonowal also presented a detailed overview of the ten-day Deeksharambh schedule, which was specially designed to facilitate the smooth transition of students into the professional and academic environment of the college. The programme comprises a series of motivational talks by faculty and invited experts, along with sessions providing valuable insights into the field of physiotherapy and its evolving prospects. In alignment with the guidelines laid down by the University Grants Commission (UGC), the programme includes awareness sessions on anti-ragging, prevention of sexual harassment (POSH), gender sensitisation, and the activities of the National Service Scheme (NSS). Furthermore, it integrates health and fitness-related sessions as part of the nationwide Fit India Movement, thereby promoting the holistic development of the students.
In his keynote address, Dr. Gopal Krishna Prabhu warmly welcomed the new batch of students and urged them to embrace the opportunities and responsibilities that come with higher education. He emphasised the importance of discipline, personal integrity, and professional commitment. Dr. Prabhu reassured the parents about the university’s dedication to providing a safe, inclusive, and academically enriching environment that would nurture their wards into competent and ethical healthcare professionals.
The programme concluded with an interactive session between the faculty and the parents, providing a platform for open communication and building trust and rapport within the academic community. This session was particularly appreciated for its warmth and transparency.
The Deeksharambh programme thus marked a significant and meaningful beginning to the academic journey of the newly admitted students, reinforcing SMCPT’s commitment to educational excellence, student welfare, and the holistic development of future physiotherapy professionals.
