The
Department of English, in collaboration with the Drama Club, Faculty of
Humanities, Social Sciences and Liberal Arts (FHSSLA), Sikkim Manipal
University, celebrated the birth and death anniversary of William Shakespeare
with a vibrant and thought-provoking event titled "Shakespeare Lives On"
at the SMIMS Auditorium on 23rd April 2025. The programme
highlighted the timeless relevance of Shakespeare's works through an engaging
blend of drama, poetry, music, and discussion.
The
event began with a warm welcome address by Dr. Suditya Sapcotta, Convener in
Charge of FHSSLA, followed by an address from Dr. Madan Chhetri, Coordinator of
FHSSLA.
Two
plays stole the spotlight- "The Sister of Silverwood" by the Drama Club
and "King Lear: Dad Issues and Drama Queens" performed by MA II Semester
students-each offering unique reinterpretations of Shakespearean themes.
Poetry
recitations, both classical and self-composed, enriched the literary spirit of
the event. A lively panel discussion titled "Shakespeare in the Modern World:
Relevance and Reinterpretations" explored the continued impact of
Shakespeare's work in contemporary contexts.
The
celebration also featured a musical choir and an open mic segment showcasing a
dynamic mix of songs, comedy acts, beatboxing, and monologues.
The
event was meticulously coordinated by Ms. Priyanka Sharma, Assistant Professor,
FHSSLA, who played a pivotal role in organising the day's festivities. The
program concluded with the distribution of certificates and a vote of thanks
delivered by Mr. Prayash Gupta.
