DESCRIPTION:
The
Annual Day celebration of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology was conducted
with immense enthusiasm and splendor on the 30th of April, 2025. The
proceedings commenced at 9:50 AM with the arrival of the dignitaries. The
faculty members gave a warm welcome to the invitees, thus setting a befitting
tone for the colorful celebrations that were to unfold. The dignitaries' visit
lent a lot of gravitas to the occasion. Present among the distinguished guests
was the Honourable Chief Guest of the day, our guide and mentor, the Vice
Chancellor of Sikkim Manipal University, Air Vice Marshal Dr. D.C. Agarwal,
accompanied by Madam Alka Agarwal. The Director of SMIT, Cdr. Dr. G.L. Sharma,
and Dr. Jyotika Sharma; the Dean of the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical
Sciences, Prof. Dr. Murildhar V. Pai; the Controller of Examinations of SMU,
Prof. Dr. Keertilata Pai; the Associate Director of Research and Academics
In-Charge, Prof. Dr. Chandra Shekhar Bhuyan; the Associate Director of Student
Affairs, Prof. Dr. Pankaj Chettri; the Head of General Services, Col. Virendra
Yadav; the Senior Finance Officer, Mr. S.V. Ravi Shankar; and the Head of IT,
Mr. Bittopan Sarma Baruah, were among the distinguished dignitaries present.
The
Health Camp and Blood Donation Camp were officially inaugurated by the Chief
Guest and other dignitaries at 10:30 AM. This effort reaffirmed SMIT's firm
commitment towards social responsibility, health awareness, and community
service. Students, staff, and faculty members participated wholeheartedly,
offering their services towards this humanitarian effort.
At 11:00
AM, the festivities continued to the Marina Auditorium for the ceremonial
rendition of the National Song. This instant of collective pride and solidarity
amidst such a multicultural student body was a poignant reminder of the shared
values that define the SMIT family. Following the National Song, the guests
participated in the lighting of the traditional diya, representing wisdom,
optimism, and auspicious starts. This was followed without gap by a floral
offering to Dr. T.M.A. Pai, the visionary founder of the Manipal Group, thus
recognizing his lasting legacy in the fields of education and health.
The
formal cultural programme had a rousing start with an energetic display of
student talent. The stage erupted with performances that varied from classical
and contemporary dance to soulful singing renditions. Every performance was a
reflection of the creativity developed at SMIT and was received with warm
applause. A major highlight of the day was viewing "Manipal Through the
Ages," a video tribute to Dr. T.M.A. Pai. The documentary provided an
inspiring insight into the legacy of the Manipal institutions and their service
to education and healthcare over the decades.
Following
the video presentation, the Director, SMIT, gave the Annual Report, which
encapsulated the institution's academic success, research milestones, placement
figures, and strategic initiatives. This was followed by the inauguration of
SMITSONIAN 2025, the institute annual magazine. The magazine encapsulated the
year's milestones, departmental success, student contributions, and stories
that encompassed SMIT's vibrant academic life. This was followed by the launch
of the Alumni Newsletter, which contained achievements and insights from the
global SMIT alumni community.
The next
session was to confer students' academic achievements by awarding them medals,
certificates, and mementos for their brilliant performance in front of peers,
faculty, and dignitaries.
This was
succeeded by a 1:00 to 2:00 PM lunch break that provided a chance for casual
interaction between students, teachers, and visitors—a manifestation of the
warmth and hospitality that characterize SMIT's culture.
Following
the luncheon, the Prize Distribution Ceremony resumed with its second half, as
the awards for students excelling in club activities, extracurricular
performance, and service to society were conferred. Student Council members
were also recognised and presented with mementos and certificates. This was
followed by the selection of the Best Non-Teaching Staff and the honouring of
employees who completed 25 years of unwavering service. Their contributions in
various capacities were deeply appreciated and duly rewarded, reflecting the
holistic spirit of development and gratitude nurtured at SMIT. The ceremony
concluded with the announcement of the Best Department of the Year, a title
proudly claimed by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. While
other departments were acknowledged in various categories, CSE emerged as the
overall winner.
All day
long, SMITSONIAN 2025 was a point of pride in itself, encapsulating the essence
of SMIT's journey throughout the year. The Annual Day ended on a grand note,
leaving behind pride, unity, and inspiration. SMITSONIAN 2025 not only
commemorated the institute's values of excellence, integrity, and service but
also acted as a lasting reminder of the strength and vitality of the SMIT
community. The event ended with the vote
of thanks by Associate Director of Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Pankaj Chettri.
